Cyber Thursday: What Canadian Businesses Should Know This Week
We’re keeping an eye on the latest cyber security news — Here’s what you need to know.
Here are two important events from last week that could impact Canadian businesses — and how Adroit Technologies helps protect you.
🔐 TELUS Investigates a Cyber Breach
One of Canada’s largest telecommunications providers, TELUS, confirmed last week that it is investigating a cyber security incident involving unauthorized access to some internal systems. TELUS has stated that affected customers are being notified and that services remain operational, but the incident is being treated seriously and law enforcement is involved.
Does this affect me?
If you’re a TELUS customer: Review any notification from TELUS and take action right away—especially if you use TELUS for business internet, mobility, email hosting, or other connected services. As a precaution, change passwords for any TELUS-managed portals and ensure MFA is enabled wherever it’s offered.
If you’re not a TELUS customer: It can still affect you indirectly. Use this as a reminder to confirm which vendors have access to your data, require MFA for all accounts, and make sure vendor/admin accounts are monitored for unusual sign-ins.
The Bigger Picture
Even if your company isn’t a TELUS customer, incidents like this highlight a growing reality:
- ⚠️ Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting trusted service providers
- 🔍 Data breaches can happen without immediately disrupting services
- 🔗 Supply-chain attacks mean your risk isn’t limited to your own systems
💡 In simple terms: Your security is only as strong as the partners and platforms you rely on.
✅ How we can help
Adroit Technologies can help you quickly confirm your exposure and reduce third-party risk by:
- Reviewing and securing vendor integrations (email, cloud, telecom, and admin portals)
- Enabling and enforcing multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all business-critical accounts
- Monitoring for unusual sign-ins, inbox rules, and data access that may indicate account misuse
- Mapping what data lives where, who can access it, and what to lock down first
🧩 Critical Microsoft Security Updates Released (Patch Tuesday)
Microsoft released its March 2026 security updates, fixing over 80 vulnerabilities across Windows, Microsoft 365, Office, and related systems. Some of these issues could allow attackers to access data or run malicious code if systems are not updated.
While none of these vulnerabilities are known to be actively exploited yet, delayed updates are one of the most common ways attackers get in.
Does this affect me?
If you use Windows or Microsoft 365 (most businesses do): Yes—this applies to you. Make sure updates are installed on servers and employee devices, and confirm reboot requirements so updates actually take effect. Prioritize devices used by executives, finance, and anyone with access to sensitive data.
If you don’t primarily use Microsoft: It’s still worth checking. Many line-of-business apps, accounting tools, or partner systems rely on Windows endpoints somewhere. Ensure any Microsoft devices in your environment (even a few) are patched and included in your regular update process.
Why This Matters
- 🚨 Many attacks don’t start with hacking — they start with missing updates
- 📄 Just opening a malicious file can sometimes be enough on unpatched systems
- 🎯 Small and mid-sized businesses are often targeted because updates are delayed
✅ How we can help
We can help you get patches applied quickly and safely by:
- Managing Windows and Microsoft 365 updates across your fleet
- Identifying devices that are missing patches / out of compliance and remediating them
- Scheduling updates to minimize downtime while keeping you protected
- Testing/validating changes so updates don’t disrupt day-to-day operations
